Sam Michael is a colorist and the founder of Color Motel, a boutique color studio focused on crafting distinctive looks for narrative and commercial work. His approach blends intuitive color with a strong sensitivity to texture, contrast, and atmosphere. helping directors and cinematographers refine the emotional language of their images in the final stage of post-production.
Before founding Color Motel, Sam worked as a colorist and director of photography at the National Inventors Hall of Fame, where he graded documentary pieces and commercial work while developing a deep understanding of the relationship between lighting, capture, and final color. That background continues to shape his collaborative approach, working closely with filmmakers to carry the original visual intent through to the finished image.
Inspired by Ansel Adams’ belief that the darkroom is the second half of the photographic process, Sam views color grading as the final creative step in shaping a film’s visual identity. Through Color Motel, he partners with directors and DPs to push images beyond technical correction. helping them cross the finish line with a look that feels intentional, cinematic, and true to the story.
